Welcome to Betty, new Postdoc

We are glad to welcome 3 new Photosymbiosis team members this month! Betty SANDS is one of them, she has started her Post Doc within the ERC SymbiOCEAN project for 2 years.

A few words from Betty:

“During my Biological Sciences degree at Queen’s University in Belfast I focussed on genomics and marine processes. Following this, my Biosciences PhD at the University of Warwick allowed me to describe the genetics and physiology of responses to the light spectrum in Ostreococcus spp., a fascinating genus of green algae and the smallest free-living eukaryote. Next, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Umeå University where the waters of the northern Baltic are subject to terrestrial inputs which result in ‘browning’ light conditions. Here I used a combination of sampling, experimentation, and metabarcoding to show that the marine microbial community can shift in response to a narrowed light spectrum. I’m excited to be joining the LPCV Photosymbiosis team and to investigate the mechanism behind the export of carbohydrates from the haptophyte Phaeocystis to its Acantharia hosts.”

We wish her all the best and success!
