Welcome to Leona, new PhD student

Photosymbiosis team has a new member!!  Leona Schumacher started her PhD project in November within the ERC project SYMBIOCEAN.

A few words from Leona:

“After completing my biochemistry degree at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, I had the opportunity to explore the micro-sized but huge world of cryo-EM at EMBL. The University of Cologne then paved my way from protein research to plant breeding and brought me even closer to the fascinating field of structural biology. Now I am happy to be part of the Photosymbiosis team, where I can combine my interest in plant physiology with the exciting challenges of imaging techniques. What drives me is the opportunity to apply the details of structural biology on a larger scale to the dynamic field of ecology. In my current project, I am investigating the plasticity and morphophenotypic landscape of the microalga Phaeocystis both inside and outside its host with regard to how it is affected by external factors such as rising temperatures and fluctuating CO2 levels.”

We wish Leona success in her work with the Photosymbiosis team!
