Welcome to Liz, new EMBO Postdoc

We are glad to welcome 3 new Photosymbiosis team members this month! Liz COONEY is one of them, she is starting an EMBO Post Doc fellowship for 2 years.

A few words from Liz:

“I began my career in marine science with a bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology at University of Oregon in the USA. After spending two years in the biotechnology industry post-graduation, I realized I wanted to remain in academia, attending Western Washington University for a master’s degree in Environmental Science. This was my first exposure to dinoflagellates and photobiology research. Knowing I wanted to continue working with dinoflagellates and gain a broader toolset to study them, I did my PhD in a protist lab at the University of British Columbia in Canada, elucidating the evolutionary history of dinoflagellates using single cell sequencing, and then expanded this approach to explore understudied protists more broadly as a postdoc. Now that I am a member of the Photosymbiosis Team, I will return my focus to dinoflagellates, particularly the cyanobiont-bearing Dinophysiales, to learn about the complex relationship between hosts and symbionts.”

We wish her all the best and success!
